How To Choose Quality Materials For Roofs

The choice of materials used in constructing a roof depends on several factors, such as the type of construction on which it will be mounted, the style of roof that will be built, the load it will support, etc.

The roof structure can be made of wood, concrete, or metal, and the choice of tiles should vary according to the aesthetics you want to obtain and the fit that each model presents. It is essential to use quality materials according to knowledgeable contractors, and the choice must be made according to the degree of impermeability, resistance, durability, and thermo-acoustic characteristics.

Roofs With Apparent Coverage

This type of coverage follows a more classical proposal where the roof structure is apparent and has eaves that extend over the building’s façade. It is a type of roof that can have many variations depending on the structure to be covered and composed of several flat inclined surfaces (so-called roof waters) at different levels or just one.

Generally, the apparent roofs ask for better quality tiles such as ceramic, concrete, etc. Its advantage is precisely in this great possibility of customization. We can also mention the ease of installation, functionality, and practicality of the eaves. They serve as protection for doors, windows, and walls and eliminate the need to add masonry for platbands or coatings.

Recessed Roofs

Recessed roofs are primarily used in modern constructions and consist of structures where the roof and the slope of the tiles are hidden behind vertical extensions of the external walls, called platbands. This covering needs a good design for installing the rainwater drainage system, gutters, flashings, and pipes, as they must be embedded.

The advantages of this type of roof are that simpler tiles, such as fiber cement, can be used, and consequently, a lighter wooden or metallic structure to support them since the entire roof will not be apparent.

Cover Slabs

It is also widespread to choose to leave buildings with only the slab as a finish. In this case, some important factors should be considered, such as waterproofing and thermal comfort, since the roof will be directly exposed to bad weather.

It is necessary to invest in a sound waterproofing system to prevent infiltration and, consequently, damage the house’s structure and avoid excessive heating inside the house. It is recommended to use thermal insulation blankets.

We can mention as an advantage the fact that, depending on the type of construction, the slab can be transformed into a leisure area such as a hanging garden, solarium, and even receive a second habitable floor in the future.
