What Features Are Most Important in a Home Security System?

When I first began thinking about installing a home security system, I did what many other people have done before me: I sat down and thought about the features that were most important. Those features would help determine what I purchased and how much I spent.

Considering potential features is a good idea simply because there are so many options these days. From wireless video cameras to smart locks, the security industry has really stepped up its game. But that’s not all. Well-known providers like Vivint Home Security are going the extra mile by integrating security and home automation features in whole-home systems.

A Vivint home security system is more than just a collection of sensors and cameras. It can also include everything from smart locks to smart lighting, temperature control, and garage door security.

Top Three Features to Consumers

Thinking about security system features led me to wonder what consumers have to say about it. I did some research and ran across some fascinating statistics. In terms of the feature’s most important to consumers, here are the top three:

1. Video Cameras

Survey data reveals external video cameras as the most important security feature the consumers. Approximately 32% rank them as their number one priority. I am not surprised. In fact, it makes perfect sense.

Exterior video cameras provide early warning. They also create evidence in the event a crime does occur. People just feel more comfortable being able to see what is going on outside the house rather than waiting until someone actually breaks in.

2. Motion Sensors

The number two priority among consumers surprised me: motion sensors. I would be more likely to rank window and door sensors higher for the mere fact that they are better at detecting unauthorized entry. Motion sensors can be inadvertently tripped by pets, automated lights turning on or off, and even dust in the air.

Nonetheless, most consumers with security systems feel that their motion sensors are a high priority. The sensors certainly have their advantages. A strategically placed motion sensor can provide extra coverage in areas where cameras are inappropriate.

3. Flood Lights

Rounding out the list are flood lights. This particular feature makes sense given how often we are told to install adequate lighting outside our homes. Flood lights, especially those equipped with motion sensors, can be a startling and effective deterrent to prowlers who prefer to work at night.

Window and door sensors are among the more common home security devices left off the list. Yet they are still a critical feature in modern home security. Sensors mounted on first floor windows and doors represent an effective way to detect unauthorized entry whether a homeowner is home or not.

Home Security Monitoring

I admit to being surprised that monitoring was not on the list of top home security priorities. Why? Because monitoring makes all the difference in the world. If no one is monitoring a security system, the system is nothing more than a noise-making alarm. Monitoring makes it a crime prevention tool.

Monitoring is important enough that some people are willing to pay a monthly fee for professional service. Other homeowners monitor their systems by themselves, setting up the systems to send alerts to their smartphones whenever an alarm is triggered.

If you are thinking about getting into the home security market for the first time, do yourself a favor and research available features. Decide what is most important to you before making any choices. Getting the right features could mean the difference between your satisfaction and regrets over joining the home security revolution.
